RAW Nutrition Essential Pre-Workout: Best Everyday Pre-Workout?
Updated January 31, 2026.
One essential component of any workout program is your supplement stack. Pre-workout is among the more important of those items. And there are almost as many pre-workouts out there as there are squat and bench variants. That said, not all are created equal, but most of them really aren’t that bad.
But you don’t want something that’s “not that bad.” You want the best. I’m going to try to give that to you today in my humble opinion. Let’s start this off with a review of the pre-workouts most commonly seen in big box stores and membership clubs: Raw Essentials Pre-WorkOut.
A collaboration between Chris Bumstead and Raw Nutrition, these pre-workouts are some of the best out there on the market for the money. Coming in at competitive prices with high quality backing it up, these are no joke.
Let’s start with my mainstay flavor: Fruit Burst. This flavor hits you right in the nostalgia feels. It has a red Kool-Aid vibe like the type you used to get from chugging red flavored sugar as a kid on a hot summer afternoon. Bright, fire-engine red like a Solo cup, Raw Nutrition Essential Pre-WorkOut smells amazing, and honestly, just one scoop is all you need for a solid session (at least in my experience so far).
So, if you’ve been wondering about Cbum’s supplements or you’re looking for a good pre-workout to get you started on your fitness journey, we’ve got you covered in this article.

Mixability & Taste
Raw Essential Pre-Workout dissolves instantly, whether you’re using it in a bottle of water or a shaker. No clumps, no gritty bits at the bottom. The sweetness is on point, and we’re not talking about some weird chemical taste you sometimes get. It leaves basically no aftertaste, but your mouth will be a little dyed from the deep red powder. Again, think red Kool-Aid but for gains.

Some General Pre-Workout Effects You Need to Know
Pumps – L-Citrulline
L-Citrulline is a pump enhancer because it boosts nitric oxide production in your body.
Translation? Your blood vessels are more dilated or open, so you get increased blood flow to your muscles. More blood functionally means that more nutrients and oxygen are going right where they’re needed, your muscles.
Endurance – Beta-Alanine
When you train hard, lactic acid builds up in your muscles, which you might notice from a slight burning or even pain sensation. Beta-Alanine helps in the production of carnosine, a substance that mitigates the impact of lactic acid on workout performance and lets you push through a few more reps before hitting the wall. The tingling sensation often associated with pre-workouts is how you can be sure your pre is doing its thing.
Energy – Regular vs. Charged
While this review focuses on the regular flavors, we would be remiss if we didn’t point out that there is another option: Charged. Regular pre contains 200 mg of caffeine that should be sufficient enough to get you hyped without feeling wired. Charged is more like the “go big or go home” option of the Raw Nutrition pre-workout family of products. Sporting 350 mg caffeine, Dynamine, and Theobromine, charged promises intense energy without the crashes you normally associate with that kind of pre. We will review those soon, of course.
Focus & Cognition
The regular version has Tyrosine and B12 to give you benefits in terms of mental clarity. If you need sharper focus, the Charged version kicks that up with something called Alpha-GPC, renowned for supporting improved brain function as well as alertness for intense training sessions.

Raw Nutrition Essential Pre-WorkOut Timing & Duration
User note: You should probably make sure taking pre-workouts are good for your individual health situation before you embark on a program. Consulting with a physician familiar with your medical history might help you make the best decisions here.
That said, if you haven’t been taking pre-workout on a somewhat regular basis, you’ll feel this almost immediately. For me, peak effects came around about 20 to 30 minutes after I finished drinking it, and for me there’s no real crash later. This is pretty key for a lot of people. Crashing out during a workout is pretty miserable and can pretty much end the session so avoiding that or even the periphery of it makes the Raw Essential Pre-Workout an absolute winner in my book. Also, it’s probably worth reminding you that I typically do one scoop as opposed to the recommended two scoops once you have built a tolerance. I will try that out one day and report back to you here.
Raw Nutrition Essential Pre-WorkOut Side Effects & Tolerance
Paresthesia from Beta-Alanine
What is that pre-workout tingling sensation about anyway? That tingling or itch you get a few minutes after drinking is called paresthesia. It’s harmless and totally temporary but you’ll notice it on your face, neck, or arms. For me, it kicks in within five minutes, sometimes makes my skin feel hot or tingly or both, and then it completely recedes as I start lifting.
Caffeine Sensitivity Issues
If you’re sensitive to caffeine, as I’ve said above, 200 mg can still feel strong, and the Charged version is a more amped up version of the regular. Too much caffeine has some crappy side effects and if you’re a night owl, you might want to think twice before gulping down a bunch of this. As much as you might think you’re going to wear yourself out at the gym and counteract the caffeine, my experience has told me time and time again that this is hubris. There are, of course, some non-stim pre-workouts out there that we will get around to recommending for our readers who spend their nights burning the midnight oil at their local gyms.
What Sets the Raw Nutrition Essential Pre-WorkOut Charged Version Apart from the Regular
Essential Charged Pre-Workout is the big brother in the Raw lineup. It’s got more L-Citrulline (6 g instead of 4 g), the same Beta-Alanine, but with a massive 350 mg caffeine hit plus Dynamine, Theobromine, and Alpha-GPC. It’s designed for experienced gym-goers who want serious focus, long-lasting energy, and a bigger pump effect.
🔥 If that sounds more like your style, you can try out one of the Charged versions: Charged Blue Rathberry, Charged Citrus Grapefruit, Charged Sour Watermelon.
Raw Nutrition Essential Pre-WorkOut Flavor-Specific Highlights & Drawbacks
Fruit Burst tastes awesome if you’re into candy and fruity drinks. It’s definitely on the fun side rather than the “sophisticated” side — so if you’re looking for exotic, tropical blends, you might want to check other flavors in the line.
Blue Raspberry, along with Fruit Burst, Blue Raspberry is another standby for me that is what you would expect given its Kool-Aid-esque color, vibe, and flavor. It shares the strengths and weaknesses of the Fruit Burst from a flavor and appeal standpoint and is another option if red fruit punch isn’t really your thing. A staple of the 1990s scene, Blue Raspberry is a sign that a company has done its homework when it comes to putting out flavors that consumers want. Best of all is that you are likely to find this and Fruit Burst on store shelves in pretty much any big-box outlet if you’re into physical shopping which is hard to say for a lot of the awesome pre-workouts out on the market.
Sour Watermelon is what I imagine the fruit grown in Chernobyl, directly inside of the derelict power plant itself, would taste like. Pink and with a pungent chemical taste, I really don’t like this one but I’ve gone through two tubs of it without really having too much pain associated with it. Would I do it again? No. Would I pick it up if it were the only option? Yes, of course. Everything here is a solid, great product.
Peach Mango or anything orange is typically the best and this is no exception. Best flavor, awesome chilled, tastes like orange juice that gets you ready for the gym. All of this is a matter of taste, of course, but you can’t beat Peach Mango as far as I’m concerned.
Grape is second only to Peach Mango. It’s purple, it’s what you expect, it’s Kool-Aid vibes without promising too much or giving an off taste.

Comparison with Other Products
I’ve tried most of the Raw flavors, and Fruit Burst and Blue Raspberry are my top picks. They’re both easy to drink and give me great performance. Sour Watermelon isn’t bad, but the taste and overall vibe just don’t hit the same.

Final Thoughts & Recommendations
If you’re starting out in the gym or just want a dependable daily pre-workout that won’t wreck your sleep or make your chest feel like you’re going to give birth to a xenomorph, Fruit Burst Essential Pre-Workout is a killer choice. It’s smooth, tastes phenomenal, and delivers a heady blend of pump, energy, and endurance.
For the caffeine junkies and hardcore lifters who want to feel like they’re in a movie montage, Charged might be more your speed. Review of that coming right up.
Either way, Raw Essential Nutrition has nailed the balance between performance and flavor here and this pre-workout is hard to beat.
