North Carolina GOP Makes Power Grab After Election Loss Of Governorship | Rachel Maddow | MSNBC

After a narrow loss in the governor’s race, the North Carolina controlled state legislature hopes to limit the incoming governor-elect Roy Cooper’s executive powers including making Cabinet appointees subject to state senate approval, removing the governor’s power to appoint trustees of the University of North Carolina system and the state board of education, and to eliminate other gubernatorial appointments. The legislature is using a special session focused on disaster relief in the state to pass these additional measures after a bitter contest between outgoing Governor Pat McCrory and Roy Cooper, a contest whose results were challenged multiple times by the McCrory campaign.
