Earthquake Solomon Islands – Tsunami Waves Possible After 8.0 Quake

A powerful magnitude 8 earthquake hit the Solomon Islands 43 miles off of the coast of the island Makira. The earthquake was reportedly very deep whereas shallow quakes tend to generate larger tsunamis. Makira, also known as San Cristobal, is home to 500,000 people. The quake recalls a similarly powerful 2013 earthquake with a magnitude of 8.0 that struck the Solomon Islands, creating a tsunami approximately 1.5 metres (5ft) high that damaged dozens of homes and killed 9 people.
