Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan Urges Turks to Take to Streets in Support of Government

TURKEY’S MILITARY SAYS ARMED FORCES ‘FULLY SEIZED CONTROL’ OF COUNTRY; ALL SOCIAL MEDIA BLOCKED from ABC7NY

Numerous reports indicate that the armed forces of the Republic of Turkey have seized control of the country and the government from democratically elected President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Internet access is limited and social media accounts are blocked; two major bridges into the capital city of Ankara are blocked by military forces. Tanks and gunfire could be heard in the outskirts of the capital and fighting was witnessed near the military bases in the capital. Ataturk airport is closed and its access blocked by the Turkish military. All flights into and out of the country are cancelled. Prime Minister Binali Yildirim denied the reports of a coup by the military, saying: “We are focusing on the possibility of an attempt (coup),” Yildirim said. “There was an illegal act by a group within the military that was acting out of the chain of military command. Our people should know that we will not allow any activity that would harm democracy.”

Reports indicate that the coup may be limited to the major cities of Istanbul and Ankara but there is uncertainty surrounding the situation.
