Saudi Arabia Beheads Sri Lankan Nanny Despite International Calls for Clemency

The nanny, a 17-year old Sri Lankan woman at the time of her crime, was convicted of smothering a four-month old infant to death. Rizana Nafeek initially blamed the young boy’s death on choking. After her guilty verdict was confirmed by the Saudi Interior Ministry, Nafeek was behead by a sword-wielding executioner in the city of Dawadmy outside of the Saudi capital of Riyadh. Saudi Arabia’s legal code is based upon a strict interpretation of the Quran and Sharia law. Last year, the kingdom beheaded 76 people.
