One of the main inspirations for my first book, ANIMUS PROXY, was the amazing electronic music featured on this website. This influence stretches back into the classic rock and pop tracks of the 1960’s in the United States, to enka music in Japan from the same period to the present. A form of electronic music that intrigues me the most is the sort of dark, club music you see emerging in the late 1980’s and 1990’s throughout Europe and the United States.

This song by Pertubator illustrates that kind of dark, gritty, synthetic sound that embodies, at least in the case of ANIMUS PROXY, the cyberpunk, science fiction aesthetic. The clip is set to a music video from the famous Tech Noir club scene in The Terminator. For some reason, I can’t think of a more perfect accompaniment to this track. Similar to ANIMUS PROXY, The Terminator series is about two factions warring for control over the planet, one representing synthetic, artificial intelligence and the other humanity. Unlike The Terminator, in ANIMUS PROXY this conflict is not always self evident, and even the line between human and synthetic itself is blurred by the passage of time and the convergence of technology.

The science fiction movies of the 1980’s, particularly those of Ridley Scott, deeply impacted the narrative and visual style I used in ANIMUS PROXY with the classic backdrop of a 1950’s noir detective story as my cursory outline.
