A remake of the popular Playstation 1 game, Final Fantasy VII, was first announced at E3 2015 during the Square Enix conference; since then, news about the upcoming game has been scarce. It was revealed by game producer Yoshinori Kitase that the Final Fantasy VII: Remake was delayed so that the team could focus on the new game in the series, Final Fantasy XV.

While this news is certainly annoying, he did provide some details to make up for this. The remake will be split into several full-scale game episodes as a multi-part series, with the first installment arriving possibly in 2017 (Editor’s note: some rumors point to March 2017 – this is particularly impossible given the tentative DLC schedule for FFXV, a game which has taken nearly a decade to complete). While the original Final Fantasy VII had a number of spin-offs, both in video game format and otherwise, the multi-episode approach to FFVII Remake promises gamers a wealth of content for years to come. The promise that each will be treated as a full installment in the series in terms of content hints at a massive epic of heretofore unseen scale for a JRPG.

Advent Children, Dirge of Cerberus, and Crisis Core are among just a few of the spin-offs of one of Square Enix’s most beloved installments in Final Fantasy. While there are no specifics as to the approach the team will take, we can only hope that some of the ideas and back story presented in these spin-off games will be given new life in the remake.

It should also be interesting to see how Square Enix’s team handles FFVII’s legendary soundtrack: what additions will be made, what will be omitted, and what variations will be presented. Voice acting, among other modern innovations, will likely change the tone of the game somewhat (the character of Barret comes to mind most immediately as someone in need of a modern adjustment).

The silence from Square Enix about Final Fantasy VII: Remake means that there is no official release date but considering that Final Fantasy XV is due for a November release, fans can expect the team to place all of their attention on the remake very soon after the successful launch of FFXV and its DLC.
