Chinese Bridge Destroyed in Fireworks Explosion

A heavy fog fell over Yihang bridge prior to the explosion that killed at least 6 people and destroyed a 80 meter section of the bridge and sent cars plummeting to the ground near Sanmenxia city.

The southern portion of Yihang bridge is entirely collapsed while the northern section remains impassable. That the force of a firework explosion could destroy a bridge has many in China concerned about its recently built infrastructure, much of which was constructed at a break-neck pace.

Fireworks are a popular feature of the Chinese new year which begins February 10. Fireworks were banned in the People’s Republic of China from 1993 until 2005 but the ban was lifted due to popular pressure.
