State Media in the People’s Republic of China Warns DPRK Over Planned Nuclear Test

In a change of tone, official state media outlets in the PRC are criticizing North Korea’s latest round of bellicose posturing, threatening aid cuts if the DPRK proceeds with yet another nuclear test.

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s main ally, China, has criticized the regime through official media outlets after North Korea threatened the United States and South Korea in some of the most aggressive rhetoric to come out of the regime since the death of Kim Jong-il in 2011.

The Global Times pointed out that China approved the United Nations Security Council resolution against North Korea and noted the state, while hoping for stability on the peninsula, would not hesitate to cut food and fuel aid.

Even though China has threatened to cut aid, PRC Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei also repeated the typical refrain heard from Beijing whenever North Korea erupts, “stay calm, be discreet in words and deeds and look at the long-term interest and push for the resumption of the six-party talks.”
