Twitter and Hate Speech? French Jewish Group Wants Twitter to Reveal Names of Anti-Jewish Tweeters

At the intersection of private life and public space exist online forums like Facebook and Twitter, which are neither entirely private nor entirely public (depending on a user’s site preferences) yet still invoke expectations of privacy and respect for others that are foundational to many of the social norms in democratic societies. What does a community or state do, however, when the individual is using this forum to promote hatred or even incite violence? Does the state intervene and stop such ‘hateful’ speech or does it back away from it entirely for free of trampling on an individual’s right to self-expression. Al Jazeera’s Inside Story examines this very issue in depth.
