Salvatore Montagna, rumored acting boss of the New York Bonanno family, was found dead on Ile aux Tresors on the Assomption River near Charlemagne, a suburb outside of the city of Montreal. He died from a gunshot wound. There are witness reports of a man jumping into the river and it is believed this man was likely Bonanno, running in an effort to evade his killer. According to New York Daily News, Montagna was making a bid to take over the Cosa Nostra in Montreal. Montagna was from Sicily but was born in Montreal, eventually immigrating to the United States and taking over New York City’s Bonanno crime family until his deportation in 2007. Because he is a Canadian citizen he could not be denied entry into the country.
