According to Al Jazeera at least 70 people have been killed in the “bloodiest day” in the uprising against Bashar al-Assad’s government, many of the victims in the province of Deraa. Syrian Security Forces are responsible for the majority of the killings according to human rights groups in Syria. Regional condemnation of Assad’s regime continues, spearheaded by Turkey’s Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan who has used the crisis as a moment to rally the Middle East around Turkey as a new power player in the region. Turkey has even gone so far as to threaten to cut off the power it supplies to Syria. The Jordanian embassy was attacked by pro-Assad rioters after King Abdullah II of Jordan told the BBC he thought Assad should step aside. The UN reports 3,500 killed thus far in the uprising against Assad’s regime.
